NENE HOUSING SOCIETY TO BUILD AFFORDABLE HOMES ON DERELICT LAND

Peterborough-based Nene Housing Society has initiated the purchase of a derelict seven-acre site in Millfield, Peterborough, to build a flagship housing development, providing a range of homes and other community facilities.

Nene Housing plans to build 100 new homes which will include homes for rent, shared-ownership and for sale as well as a 40-property scheme specifically for the elderly on the site. The mixed-use development will also contain a health facility which will serve the needs of the new community as well as existing residents in the surrounding area.

A significant proportion of the site will remain as public open space and childrens play area while a new sports facility, including an all-weather floodlit pitch, is also planned.

Shared-ownership housing allows first-time buyers to get a foot on the property ladder by purchasing part of their home and renting the rest.

The mixed-use scheme will be built to high standards and will be created to serve the needs of both new and existing residents, said Adam Broadway, development director at Nene Housing Society.

The site, previously a sports ground owned by Perkins Engines, has been derelict for a number of years. The new development will not only provide housing but also recreation facilities which can be used by the wider community. Our leadership and experience will enable us to recreate a fantastic new community with a range of well designed open space and sports uses for all.

Earlier this year Nene Housing formally joined the Accent Group, increasing Nene Housings ability to provide more affordable homes in the city. The partnership will also allow Nene Housing to invest more in health, training, education and community facilities.

Outline planning permission for the development has already been granted and Nene Housing plans to submit a detailed planning application in the summer. The society will carry out an extensive series of public consultations as part of the design process before the proposed scheme is finalised.
